Plot summary
Nathan lives in Detroit with his mother, Army lieutenant Margaret Peters, and with George, the man he has always called his father. When Margaret goes missing on a tsunami rescue mission in Japan, Nathan struggles to take in the news. He then learns that George is not his biological father, and Child Care Services comes to the door because his mother has not come home. Fearing that he will be taken from George before he can explain, Nathan runs off into the streets of Detroit. George sets out after him, searching the city, while Nathan meets Captain Miles, a homeless Iraq War veteran.
