Plot summary
Maria Rainer is a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg. After a day in the mountains she returns to the Abbey, where the Mother Abbess tells her that she is to become the new governess for the children of Captain von Trapp. At his house the Captain greets her coldly, and the children come in with military precision. Their father pulled away from them after the death of his wife. Maria decides to teach them the basics of singing as a way of winning their trust and acceptance.
