Plot summary
On his eighteenth birthday, Jack meets a stranger, Jess Walters, who claims to have a gift from Jack's missing father, Newald Krutchens, and says he never forgets a promise. Jack's mother, Sharon, thinks Jess is clinically insane and wants Jack to forget the matter. The gift holds only beans, which Jack tosses into an empty field. A beanstalk has grown there by morning, and a tendril traps Jack and carries him up through the clouds to a strange land, where a dinosaur-like monster chases him.
