Plot summary
Winston Churchill enters the prime ministership in September 1939, when Neville Chamberlain, who expects the British public to blame him for not seeing Hitler as a threat sooner, steps down. Chamberlain asks whether Churchill would serve as Minister for War under Lord Halifax, and Halifax says Churchill is the better choice. Churchill takes charge of the government as Britain enters the war and refuses any negotiated deal with Hitler. He draws the Labour Party into a coalition, telling its members that differences of politics and personality have to be put aside for the war to be won.
