Plot summary
Driven out of New York and chased across New Jersey in 1776, the Continental Army reaches the Pennsylvania shore of the Delaware with a fraction of its troops. They hold the only usable boats there, a reprieve until the river freezes and the British can cross to take Philadelphia. General Hugh Mercer warns Washington that ammunition, medicine, food and winter clothing are running short. Convinced the Revolution will collapse without a victory, Washington proposes crossing back to fall on the Hessian garrison posted at Trenton, and asks Colonel John Glover, a Marblehead mariner whose men have moved troops by boat before, whether it can be done in a single freezing night. General Horatio Gates attacks the plan and suggests Washington give up his command; Washington orders him to be silent and has Alexander Hamilton escort him from camp.

- Details presented during the closing credits claim that none of Washington's men were killed or wounded; in fact two Continental soldiers froze to death during the march and five were wounded during the attack, including James Monroe.
- The film takes liberties with the record: in December 1776, Gates was not removed from camp at gunpoint, and at the time in which the film is set, Alexander Hamilton had not yet joined Washington's staff.
- The Crossing won a Peabody Award for excellence in 2000, cinematographer Rene Ohashi won the 2001 ASC Award for his work on it, and the film's sound team was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing.
