Plot summary
Evan McCauley cannot hold a job in New York City because of a record of violent behavior and time spent in institutions. He takes an order for a katana from a local gangster, a blade he shapes without ever having been trained as a bladesmith. He carries skills he was never taught and recollection of places he has not seen. The deal goes wrong, Evan is arrested, and at the police station a man named Bathurst says the two of them have shared earlier lives and calls him Treadway. Nora Brightman helps him get away and explains the Infinites, five hundred people who remember every life they have led, split between Believers who want the world improved and Nihilists who want it destroyed. The Nihilists made a weapon called the Egg, which Treadway stole and hid.

- D. Eric Maikranz self-published The Reincarnationist Papers in 2009 and offered a commission in the book's first edition to anyone who successfully pitched a film adaptation to a Hollywood producer. A junior executive, Rafi Crohn, found the book in a Nepalese hostel and emailed him within eighteen months; Maikranz paid the commission in December 2019.
- Chris Evans entered negotiations in February 2019 to star in the film, but dropped out that June because of scheduling conflicts with Defending Jacob, and Mark Wahlberg entered negotiations to replace him.
- Filming took in central Cardiff, Farnborough Airport and The Snow Centre, an indoor ski facility that was shut to the public for a week so scenes could be shot there.
