Plot summary
Palmetto Grove Academy's basketball team, the Hawks, is led by Odin James, the school's only black student, and coached by Duke Goulding. When the Most Valuable Player award is given out, it goes to Odin, who shares it with teammate Michael Cassio, while Duke passes over his own son Hugo, a teammate and friend of Odin's, even saying he loves Odin like a son. Hugo works hard for the Hawks and feels his efforts go unnoticed, and at the party after the game he draws Roger Calhoun, a school outcast, into a plan against Odin, promising Roger that Desi Brable, the dean's daughter Odin has been dating, will be his.

- Screenwriter Brad Kaaya drew on Shakespeare's Othello, the wave of suburban school shootings of the 1980s, and his own experience as a Black teenager at a mostly white private school to write the modern-day adaptation.
- The film's producers ended up suing Miramax over a breach of contract, which led the studio to hand distribution over to Lionsgate instead.
