Plot summary
Dr. Martin Lowery, a scientist, is posted to a research outpost in the Arboreal Forest while a pandemic ravages the country. The outpost supports experiments by his former colleague Olivia Wendle into whether mycorrhiza can raise crop yields. Park scout Alma guides Martin on the two-day walk to Olivia's site and tells him that nothing has been heard from Olivia in months. A nighttime attack leaves the pair bruised and shoeless, and they accept help from Zach, a man living off the grid.
