Plot summary
In prehistory, Thorn and Hera raise their children Lark and Ebb, and Thorn is badly injured in a fall. In the 21st century, Claire is an anthropology PhD student at Princeton examining the remains of a Paleolithic man, wary of letting Greg, a statistics student she has started seeing, get close, and then faced with a move to Canada to care for her mother. In the distant future, with Earth failing, Coakley, engineered to live far longer than most people, departs on a 226-year mission with Rosco, an AI co-pilot, carrying embryos in stasis meant to start a new human home.
