Plot summary
Released at twenty-one, Bambi goes back to Watts and the Imperial Courts housing projects where he grew up a gangster. His son Daytone is the reason he wants a different future, and his family's future rests on the same hope. The neighborhood he returns to is violent, and the obstacles in the system press on anyone trying to come back. Mass incarceration and education are part of what he is up against. Detective Gill and Detective Hernandez are in the world he comes back to, along with Uncle Shrimp and the people he knew before. The title comes from the emperors of the projects, a notion raised in the story.
