Plot summary
The summer of 1978, in Acqua Traverse, a town in southern Italy ringed by wheat fields. Michele Amitrano, nine years old, rides out with the other children across the scorched countryside while the adults shelter indoors. A race takes the group to a deserted farmhouse, where Michele pays a forfeit by walking a beam high inside the barn. He goes back alone for the glasses his sister Maria dropped, and beneath a sheet of metal outside he finds a hole. In it lies a boy his own age, chained and weak. Michele tells no one and returns with water, then food. His father Pino drives a truck and is often away from home.

- Kidnappings became so common in 1970s Italy that the government automatically froze the assets of families whose abducted children had been contacted by people demanding a ransom, in order to discourage the practice.
