Plot summary
Irena, a Ukrainian woman on the run, arrives in northern Italy and keeps her past to herself. She looks for work in an elegant apartment building and starts with the stairs. The household she has in mind is that of Valeria and Donato Adacher, who live there with their daughter, Thea. Gina, the nanny who looks after the girl, is friendly toward her. Gina is crippled in a fall and can no longer work, and the family hires Irena in her place. Irena becomes the maid and Thea's nanny, and the child grows attached to her.
