Plot summary
One hundred steps is the distance between the Impastato house in Cinisi and the home of the local Mafia boss Tano Badalamenti. Peppino Impastato grows up in that town, in a family of good standing, and his father Luigi works for the boss. As a boy he asks Stefano Venuti, a painter and communist, to paint a portrait of his uncle Cesare Manzella, a Mafia don killed by a rival's car bomb, and Venuti takes him under his wing. As a young man Peppino protests the seizure of farmland for an airport, writes an article attacking the Mafia, and quarrels with his father over it. Turned out of the family house, he starts Radio Aut with his friends and names Badalamenti and his drug trade on the air.

The real Peppino Impastato was killed on 9 May 1978. His death was treated as a suicide and no one was convicted until the case was reopened in 1997, when Mafia boss Gaetano Badalamenti was convicted and given a life sentence.
