Plot summary
Shawn Gunderson and Vikram Kapoor are best friends in Oklahoma who find high school dull and pour their attention into all things Japanese. A mysterious anime film transforms the pair into the superhuman characters it depicts, and at first the change seems like the answer to their wildest fantasies. Ancient monsters, meanwhile, threaten to bring about the apocalypse on New Year's Eve in 1999. Miki Shimizu, a Japanese exchange student, is set on making a Native American vision quest, and her course puts her on a collision course with Shawn, Vik and their foes. Her fate may decide what happens to the world. Shawn and Vik have to rely on each other to become the heroes they are meant to be.
