Plot summary
Physician Jerri Nielsen leaves Ohio in 1999 to spend a year at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, one of the most remote places on Earth, where winter temperatures can fall to 100 degrees below zero. She is the station's only doctor, and the researchers, construction workers and support staff who stay through the winter depend on her for their care, body and mind. Among them are John Penny and Claire Furinski. When Nielsen finds a lump in her breast, no plane can land for months and the station has no way to treat it, so she performs a biopsy on herself and consults doctors in the United States by e-mail.
