Plot summary
Years ago, a man named Gert de Jager said on a recording that he had abducted girls on the orders of a National Party cabinet minister and sent them to the Middle East in exchange for oil. The recording was never made public. In present-day Johannesburg, Jodie Snyman, an officer with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, carries out raids on human trafficking that bring few results, and her operation is short of resources and close to being shut down. Then a murdered man is found with initials carved into his body. The dead man is a cabinet minister who appears on the national register for sex offenders, and the carved letters belong to Tarrynlee Shaw Carter, one of six girls who disappeared.
