Plot summary
Debby Miller lives in Bayonne, New Jersey, and a doctor tells her she has hysterical blindness, a condition that makes her sight fade in and out. The advice she gets is to spend time enjoying herself with friends. She and Beth, her closest friend, head to Ollie's, the bar where they drink, hoping to meet a man. Beth flirts with the bartender, so an angry Debby goes outside, where she meets Rick. He has little interest in her, but she talks him into walking her to her car, offers him a drink as thanks and says she will be back at the bar the next evening. Her mother, Virginia, is dating Nick, an older widower who asks her to move to Florida with him.
