Plot summary
Jimmy, the young son of the horror novelist Roger Cobb, disappears during a visit to the house of his aunt Elizabeth Hooper, and the marriage to the movie star Sandy Sinclair falls apart afterward. Roger inherits the property and moves in to write a memoir of his Vietnam War service. He befriends his neighbor Harold Gorton, a reader of his books, and the war returns in his dreams. Inside the house he sees a creature in his aunt's bedroom, a mounted swordfish that seems to come to life, and garden tools that lift off the ground. He tells Harold, who calls Sandy.

Seventeen special effects artists spent three-and-a-half months building the film's seven monsters, including the obese witch, three demonic kids and Big Ben's zombified corpse (Richard Moll). The war demon was an eighteen-foot mechanized puppet, operated by fifteen people, with a fully working lower bowel system.- Because the yard had no sidewalk, the crew laid a fake one made of plywood painted gray to look like concrete and positioned to lead straight to the front porch. A true concrete walkway was later installed in the same spot.
- The house used for the exteriors, Mills View, is a Victorian-style building constructed in 1887 on Melrose Avenue in Monrovia, California, and was owned at the time by two Los Angeles firemen.
