Plot summary
Johnny Dingle has loved Missy McCloud since childhood and has never managed to say so. In his senior year he and his best friend Eddie stage a fake robbery at the shop where Missy works, in the hope that Johnny can stop it, impress her, and be her date for the prom. A real robber turns up instead, holds the two of them at gunpoint, and shoots Johnny as he shields Missy. Once the funeral is over, Johnny climbs out of his grave and goes back to his parents' house. Murray the gravedigger tells him he cannot leave the cemetery, and Johnny ignores the warning. Missy keeps her distance, and her boyfriend Buck and his friend Chuck make their hostility clear.
