Plot summary
In Eastwick, Rhode Island, three friends complain that the town offers no suitable men. Alex Medford is a sculptor raising a child alone; Jane Spofford teaches music and cannot have children; Sukie Ridgemont writes a column for the Eastwick Word. The three are unaware that they are witches, and their regular meetings have formed a coven without their knowing it. Then a stranger, Daryl Van Horne, buys the Lenox Mansion and arrives with his butler, Fidel. Felicia Alden, the religious wife of Sukie's editor, takes against him at once. Daryl is vulgar and rude, yet he draws each of the women to him, and their meetings become more than talk.

- After a bad audition cost Anjelica Huston the role of Alexandra, Cher demanded and won that part even though it had already gone to Susan Sarandon, who was quietly recast as Jane and only learned of the switch when she arrived on location to start filming.
- Jack Nicholson expressed interest in playing the role of Daryl through his then-girlfriend Anjelica Huston, after hearing that the original actor for the role, Bill Murray, had dropped out; Huston was herself in the running for Alexandra Medford and screen-tested opposite Michelle Pfeiffer.
- Filming was originally set for Little Compton, Rhode Island, but a local dispute over whether the town's Congregational church should take part in the production forced Warner Bros. to relocate shooting to Massachusetts instead.
- A small carving shop led by woodcarver Paul McCarthy was commissioned to hand-carve all the wooden signs for the businesses shown in the film, including the newspaper where Michelle Pfeiffer's character worked, The Eastwick Word.
