Alfred Ryder
Biography
Alfred Ryder was an American actor and director in television, stage, radio, and film. Born in New York City in 1916, he began acting at age eight and later trained with Robert Lewis and Lee Strasberg, becoming a life member of The Actors Studio. In the 1930s and 1940s he appeared on Broadway and on radio, including roles in The Goldbergs and Easy Aces. After Army Air Forces service and a part in Winged Victory, he signed with Paramount in 1946 and played an undercover cop in T-Men (1947). He toured as Hamlet with the Margaret Webster Shakespeare Company and won a 1959 Obie Award for playing D.H. Lawrence in Tennessee Williams's I Rise in Flame, Cried the Phoenix. On television he guest-starred in The Wild Wild West, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Invaders, and Star Trek, and his films included True Grit (1969), Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964), Hotel (1967), and The Stone Killer (1973). He died in 1995.
