Plot summary
In 1854 Nebraska, Mary Bee Cuddy teaches in Loup, owns land, and is lonely. She proposes marriage to her neighbor Bob Giffen; he turns her down and heads east. After a bitter winter, three women break under prairie life. Arabella Sours has buried three children lost to diphtheria, Gro Svendsen suffers an abusive marriage and the death of her mother, and Theoline Belknap takes her own child's life after a poor harvest. Reverend Dowd asks their husbands to send the women east to a church in Hebron, Iowa. The men draw lots, and when Vester refuses, Cuddy takes his place and is chosen. Afraid to travel alone, she frees George Briggs, a claim jumper she finds with a noose around his neck, if he will help escort the women. He agrees but says he may abandon her at any time.
