Plot summary
In Rome, Bruno Fioretti, known as Mandrake, spends his days at the horse racing track with his friends Armando Pellicci, called Er Pomata, and Felice Roversi. The three always back the wrong horse and run out of money. Gabriella, Mandrake's girlfriend, tired of her partner's constant shortcomings, asks a fortune teller for advice and is induced to bet on a Tris race. The cards and Mandrake himself indicate the same three horses, Soldatino, King and D'Artagnan, which rank among the worst in circulation. Soldatino belongs to the lawyer De Marchis, who bets alongside the three friends. At a race in Cesena, Mandrake seems set on following Gabriella's advice, but Pomata convinces him to back Antonello da Messina, the superfavorite.
