Plot summary

The narrator is an adult, and he recalls a mysterious childhood at a mountainside hotel in the Swiss Alps, the formerly great house that belonged to Valentin's family when he was a boy. His mother and his grandmother were there with him, and so were the guests who filled the hotel: the actress Sarah Bernhardt, an anarchist assassin, torch singers and seductive women. Mlle Gabriel, Mme. Studer, Max, Prof. Malini, a tennis teacher and a couple also pass through the story. The hotel stands empty, its halls and ballrooms cleared, and it is set to be torn down, and Valentin walks through the rooms.
