Plot summary
Sonja is a high school student in a German town who wins an essay contest and travels to Paris. A new physics teacher, Martin Wegmus, arrives at her school, and though a classmate falls in love with him, he and Sonja kiss. He says he will come back for her. She enters the contest a second time and picks the subject of her town under the Third Reich. What she finds is a place whose leading families had joined the Nazi party well before it took power. The authorities block her requests for records, and the town's resistance to her questions grows.
