Biography

Ingrid Caven, a German actress and singer, got her start onstage in the 1960s with Rainer Werner Fassbinder's antiteater troupe. Born in Saarbrücken, she was a teacher in Upper Bavaria before her film career took off in the 1970s. Her debut came in 1969 in the short Fernes Jamaica, quickly followed by her first feature role, in Fassbinder's Love Is Colder Than Death. She went on to appear often in his films, among them Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? (1970), The American Soldier (1970), Fox and His Friends (1975) and Mother Küsters' Trip to Heaven (1975). She also performed as a singer. Later roles came in Claire Denis's 35 Shots of Rum (2009) and Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), and she served on the jury at the 1979 Berlin International Film Festival and won a German Film Award for Looping (1980).
