Plot summary

Aspiring actor Sam and his girlfriend Rylie, a botanist, have come to rural New England to look into an outbreak of sordico, an ergot-type fungus that is ruining local farms. They make camp at a remote farm, where Eulis, the elderly farmer who owns the land, asks them to leave. Back at their car they find the battery dead. They walk to a nearby farmhouse, where Karen, an eccentric older woman, lives with her son Gunni. Gunni is mute and partly catatonic, keeps vintage cartoons playing, and has his head wrapped in bandages; Karen says a bull kicked him there. Karen calls a mechanic named Pete to jump-start the car. While they wait, she serves Sam and Rylie food that clashes with their vegan diet, and Rylie asks about odd Polaroids of Karen's family.
