Plot summary
Ruth and her older brother Blaze live in a corner of Southern Ohio where the factories have closed. When Ruth is accepted to college, she has no money for it, so she joins a dangerous scrap metal crew alongside Blaze. Hark, a junkyard owner who sells scrap overseas, is one of the men in that trade. Through a winter, the crew works scrap yards by day and takes valuable metal from idle factories at night, and the money is meant for Ruth's tuition. Linda, a friend of Ruth and Blaze, works at a factory. Ruth has to weigh the future she has been offered against the family she would leave behind, her mother Rhonda among them.
