In Las Vegas in 1994, Pilot Kelson deals drugs and Jack Hayes cleans pools. Jack is caught with Jilly Miranda, the wife of Burt Miranda, a crime figure, and Burt sends three men after him to break his feet. Jack talks Pilot into fleeing, and Pilot chooses Seattle as the destination without saying why. Before leaving, they visit Scawldy, a drug dealer, and tell him they are bound for Detroit. At a diner the two intervene when Cassie, a young woman, is attacked in the parking lot by her pimp, and Jack offers her a ride. Burt's men learn where the pair are headed and follow.
