Plot summary

Lonely people pursue romance across different periods of New York City's history in ten linked vignettes, one character passing on to the next story. In 1901, a prostitute on a night street flirts with a passing soldier and takes him to a boathouse on the river. In 1942, a soldier at a party in an underground canteen asks a nurse carrying a tray to spend the night with him before he ships out to war. In 1967, a nurse is hired to look after a wealthy college student laid up with a tennis injury, and he awkwardly tries to flirt with her.
