Plot summary
Eric, a teenager who makes films, records the lives of Allison Lang, her boyfriend Toby, and their crowd of upper-class white teenagers in the Pacific Palisades. Allison talks with her father at his office about family problems. Allison and her friends head into East Los Angeles, where they buy marijuana from Hector, a Mexican drug dealer, and his crew. Toby thinks Hector gave him too little for his money and tries to confront him. Hector pulls a gun, embarrassing Toby in front of the others, and lets the group go when Allison pleads. The following night Allison and her girlfriends go back to the spot where Hector's crew hangs out and join their party. Hector mentions a motel his crew uses and invites her to visit.

- The original treatment was written in 1993 by Jessica Kaplan, who was 14 years old at the time, and was based on her own observations of her affluent white classmates in West Los Angeles. Her script was sold to New Line Cinema two years later for $150,000.
- Jessica Kaplan, who wrote the original treatment, was killed in a plane crash in Los Angeles on 6 June 2003, shortly before filming began, along with four other people including her uncle. A dedication to her is shown preceding the credits at the end of the film.
- Mandy Moore was originally cast as Allison but dropped out shortly before filming began and was replaced by her Princess Diaries co-star Anne Hathaway; Moore reportedly left because she felt uncomfortable with the film's subject matter. Jena Malone, originally set to play Emily, left the project shortly after.
