Plot summary

A $6,000 bet on his dead father's account leaves Conor O'Neill owing two bookies, beside the ticket scalping and gambling that brought him there. A friend offers to cover the debt, on the condition that Conor take his place coaching a youth baseball team drawn from Chicago's ABLA housing projects, at $500 a week for ten weeks. Among the boys are Andre Ray Peetes, Kofi Evans, Jefferson Albert Tibbs, Jamal and pitcher Miles Pennfield II; Kofi's young brother Jarius, called G-Baby, is below the age limit and assists Conor instead. Their teacher, Elizabeth Wilkes, keeps several players back to finish book reports, so Conor begins without a full team.
