Plot summary
Michael Myers is shot off a balcony by his psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Loomis, and slips away into the alleys of Haddonfield, Illinois, on Halloween night in 1978. Laurie Strode, who survived him, is admitted to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. Loomis and Sheriff Leigh Brackett keep searching the town for Michael. At the hospital, paramedic Jimmy Lloyd is drawn to Laurie, and the head nurse, Virginia Alves, restricts how much time he can spend with her. After a newsflash names Laurie's location, Michael heads for the hospital, where the phone lines are cut and the tires of every car are slashed so no one can call for help or drive away.

John Carpenter said he came up with Halloween II's twist that Laurie Strode is Michael Myers's sister while he was drunk and looking for more material to include in the NBC television cut of the first Halloween.- Halloween II was banned in West Germany from December 1990 until January 2024 because of its graphic violence and nudity, and was also banned in Iceland; a later 1986 home video release was banned in Norway.
- In December 1982 a man murdered an elderly couple in Fullerton, California, stabbing them 43 times; his defense at trial was that watching Halloween II under the influence of PCP, marijuana and alcohol caused hallucinations.
- John Carpenter said he worked on Halloween II's post-production after seeing a rough cut that wasn't scary, "about as scary as Quincy", to bring the film at least up to par with the competition.
- Pamela Susan Shoop, who played Nurse Karen Bailey, said she and Leo Rossi were so cold their teeth chattered while filming her character's scalding death: the therapy tub water was cold and dirty, and Shoop got an ear infection.
- While editing, John Carpenter noticed the film had a plot hole, how Michael Myers tracked Laurie to the hospital, so he shot a scene of a boy walking with a portable radio broadcasting the murders and Laurie's whereabouts, who bumps into Michael.
- Director Rosenthal recalled that filming at Pasadena Community Hospital was extraordinarily difficult because it was close to an airport, and incoming planes frequently disrupted the shooting.
