Plot summary
Helen Macdonald is a naturalist whose father, Alisdair, has died suddenly. She retreats from her academic and social life and acquires a female goshawk named Mabel, setting out to train her. Taming and hunting with the bird demand meticulous routines and take her full attention, physically exhausting and emotionally consuming work. The discipline pulls her into a solitary bond with the bird and the wild instincts it carries. Her immersion brings moments of exhilaration, and it also lays out the dangers of trying to escape grief by erasing her own humanity. She turns to the natural world for refuge as she pulls away from ordinary human concerns.
