Plot summary

In 19th-century North Wales, Gwen shares a hillside farm with her mother, Elen, and her younger sister, Mari. While playing outdoors, Gwen and her sister pass a neighboring farmhouse where men are tending to bodies; Doctor Wren says the deaths came from cholera. The family attends church the next morning, and as they leave, Elen has a brief exchange with a man. Back at the farm, an animal's heart has been nailed to their door. By the next day, Gwen sees that the crops have spoiled. That night she asks her mother about the man and whether the house will be sold; Elen says it will not. Gwen next finds her mother standing in the pasture among the family's mutilated sheep.
