Plot summary
Rizwan Khan is raised in Mumbai by his mother, Razia, alongside his brother, Zakir. He is different from other children, and a reclusive local scholar tutors him while Razia gives him extra affection, which breeds resentment in Zakir. Zakir, settled in San Francisco, later brings his brother to California, where Zakir's wife, Hasina, a psychologist, diagnoses Rizwan with Asperger's syndrome. Rizwan sells beauty products for Zakir and meets Mandira Rathod, a Hindu hairstylist raising her son, Sameer, alone. Zakir objects to the match, but the two marry, and Mandira and Sameer take the Khan name. The family moves to the suburb of Banville and befriends the Garricks, until the September 11 attacks bring suspicion and hostility their way.
