Plot summary
Prem lives in Haridwar, where he runs a video cassette shop after leaving school early, and he belongs to a nationalist organization that expects its members to practice restraint. His father wants him married to Sandhya, a young woman who is educated and overweight and hopes to become a school teacher; the family also expects the marriage to bring financial help. Prem does not like her but agrees, and the two marry in a large community ceremony. Sandhya tries to draw her husband closer, while Prem takes no interest in her and is embarrassed to be seen with her on the street.
