Plot summary
Gaurav Chandna is a young man in Delhi, an obsessive fan of the film star Aryan Khanna, whose face he shares. He admires his neighbor Neha from afar; she works at a call center, and he takes first prize at a local talent show by impersonating Aryan. With his parents' encouragement he travels by train to Mumbai to hand Aryan the trophy on the star's birthday. When the actor Sid Kapoor speaks against Aryan in the press, Gaurav beats him and films an apology as a gift. Aryan has him arrested instead, then refuses him even five minutes, and Gaurav returns home vowing revenge.

- Fan became the first film ever to shoot at Madame Tussauds in London, and Khan's wax statue there was temporarily moved to the London Eye to film the scene.
- Ileana D'Cruz, Vaani Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra were each considered for the role of Aryan's wife in Fan before model Waluscha de Sousa was cast, following an audition with Shanoo Sharma.
- Maneesh Sharma first pitched the story of Fan to Aditya Chopra in 2006, but Chopra thought it too ambitious and expensive for a debut and told him to abandon it; Sharma made Band Baaja Baaraat instead.
- Fan was a songless film; its soundtrack consisted of a single promotional track that was not included in the film itself.
- To dub the role of Gaurav, Shah Rukh had to modulate his voice, and prosthetics plus visual effects were used to make him appear younger.
