Plot summary
Emma Silver built her radio career in Seattle after leaving New York City. When her grandfather Walt dies, she goes back to Valleyville, Washington, the town where she grew up. The attorney Bobby Ellis tells her she has inherited the farm along with Walt's pumpkin seeds, and that Walt wanted her to carry on a family tradition by entering the town's pumpkin growing contest. Walt's last letter asks her to find someone to look after the place. At the funeral she learns Walt owed money, and the debt must be cleared within the year or the farm will be sold. Mayor Kyle Finster already has plans for the land. Seth Cullen, her new neighbor, would like those seeds for his own entry.
