Plot summary
Elle Reid is a feminist poet and widow who has recently ended a four-month relationship with Olivia, a grad student. Her 18-year-old granddaughter Sage comes to her door pregnant, asking for $630 for an abortion scheduled that afternoon. Sage's credit card has been taken by her mother, Judy, and Elle has just paid off her late wife's medical bills, so she has no money. The two drive across Los Angeles to call in favors from people in Elle's past. They go first to the father of the child, who hands over fifty dollars. Judy is Elle's daughter, and both Elle and Sage dread telling her.

- Filming took 19 days after a week of rehearsal, in and around Los Angeles, on a total production budget under $600,000. The 1955 Dodge Royal driven by Elle is actually Tomlin's own car, and Tomlin wore her own clothes for the role.
- Paul Weitz had the idea for Grandma long before he wrote it, and only finished the story after working with Tomlin on the 2013 film Admission: "After meeting Lily, the voice and the character really clicked." He was then afraid to show her the script in case she turned down the lead role.
- The film marked Tomlin's first leading role in 27 years, the last having been the 1988 comedy Big Business, in which she co-starred with Bette Midler.
