Biography
Tom Conway was a British actor who worked in film, television, and radio, starting out in amateur theater, then joining a repertory company and touring in plays. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1940 and changed his last name to Conway. Early parts included villains in Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941) and Rio Rita (1942) and a murder suspect in Grand Central Murder (1942). At RKO Radio Pictures he took over the role of the suave amateur detective The Falcon, and he appeared in the horror films Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943), and The Seventh Victim (1943), all produced by Val Lewton. He played Sherlock Holmes and later the Saint on radio, and Bulldog Drummond in The Challenge (1948). He starred as detective Mark Saber on television from 1951 to 1954, narrated Peter Pan (1953), voiced characters in 101 Dalmatians (1961), and died in 1967.

Beyond film
Tom Conway played Sherlock Holmes on the radio during the 1946-1947 season of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, taking over after Basil Rathbone left the series. Despite his refined English accent, audiences did not receive him as well as Rathbone, and he played Holmes for only one season.

Tom Conway was the last actor to play The Saint on radio, starring in the mystery series beginning in May 1951. He succeeded Edgar Barrier, Brian Aherne, and Vincent Price in the role and performed in 22 weekly episodes.
Beyond film
Tom Conway provided the narration for Walt Disney's Peter Pan, the 1953 release, lending the film his smooth speaking voice.
About the name
In May 1940, Tom Conway signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. While he was with the studio, he stopped using the surname Sanders and took the surname Conway.
