Plot summary
Joe Ryan is master of the Triton, a salvage vessel he operates with Sam Slade. When a submarine eruption damages the ship, the two put in at Nara Island for repairs, where the harbormaster, McCartin, receives them coldly. Sean, the boy McCartin employs, shows them Viking artifacts, among them a carving he calls Ogra, the sea spirit. On the way back, Ryan and Slade come upon a diver's body holding gold coins. They dive the harbor and glimpse a large creature in the water. McCartin then tells them to stop prying and leave the island; Ryan answers by producing the coins and threatening to report the illegal hoard unless McCartin cooperates.
