Plot summary
Solo drives a cab in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the fare he earns goes to support his young family. One day William, an old man who carries a lifetime of regrets, hires him for a long trip to Blowing Rock, a peak where the updrafts are strong enough to send dropped objects upward. William asks for no ride back, and to Solo he seems deeply depressed, so Solo takes it that the man intends to end his life at the rock. Rather than let him go, Solo befriends him, hoping to talk him out of it, and brings him to meet his wife and his stepdaughter Alex, so that the old man might see what there is to live for.
