Plot summary
Andrea Singer lives in Los Angeles, where she works as a stand-up comic and auditions for acting roles, frustrated that Serrena, a rival who has been at it just as long, keeps landing parts. Flying back from an audition in New York, she meets Dennis Kelley, who returns the boarding pass she had lost, and finds herself seated beside him on the plane. He tells her he went to Yale and works in hedge funds. Back home they spend time together as friends, including drinks at the bar owned by her best friend, Margot. Dennis is free whenever she is and helps her get ready for auditions, while Andrea feels no attraction to him. After a set at The Comedy Store, he takes her to an expensive dinner and asks her to be his girlfriend; she turns him down.

- Good on Paper grew out of a real-life incident in star Iliza Shlesinger's own dating life, which she first turned into a stand-up routine called "Lying Brian" in 2015, broadcast on Comedy Central's This Is Not Happening.
- In that real story, the man Shlesinger met on an airplane claimed to be a Yale graduate who worked at a hedge fund, but her mother's suspicions uncovered that he had attended the University of Ohio and lived in a Hollywood duplex, not a Beverly Hills house.
