Plot summary
Cronauer lands in Saigon in 1965 as a new DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service and is driven to the station by Private Edward Garlick. On air he opens with his own greeting and fills the program with censored news items, jokes and rock and roll records. Second Lieutenant Steven Hauk prefers Army-approved humor and music, and Sergeant Major Phillip Dickerson is harsh with the enlisted men, but Brigadier General Taylor and the other DJs enjoy Cronauer's style. Off the air he follows a Vietnamese girl, Trinh, into an English class, pays the teacher for the chance to take over the lesson and teaches the students American slang. Her brother, Tuan, blocks his approach, then becomes a friend. A night at Jimmy Wah's bar turns into a brawl with two racist soldiers, and Dickerson reprimands him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The real Cronauer said the film took huge liberties, joking that he would still be in Leavenworth if he had done half the things in the movie. He stayed for his full one-year tour and was honorably discharged, rather than being thrown out of Vietnam.
- Barry Levinson forbade Robin Williams and the real Cronauer to meet during filming, afraid Williams would start doing an unconscious imitation of him that would change his characterisation; the two finally met at the film's New York premiere.
- The film's use of Louis Armstrong's decades-old "What a Wonderful World" sent it back onto the US Top 40 at number 32, twenty years after its original release.
