Plot summary
A guardian angel named Gabriel spends his days keeping texting drivers out of crashes, though he would rather be saving lost souls, work that belongs to another angel. Curious about a man he once saved, he watches Arj, an aspiring documentarian who lives in his car and takes odd jobs, among them shifts at a hardware store. There Arj begins dating a coworker, Elena, who campaigns to unionize the store. A job for hire brings him to Jeff, a wealthy tech investor, who hires Arj as his assistant. Gabriel holds that wealth and success will not fix what troubles Arj, and he intends to prove it.

- Aziz Ansari's first directing project, Being Mortal at Searchlight Pictures, was suspended in 2022 over star Bill Murray's alleged inappropriate behavior, and Ansari moved on to Good Fortune as his next planned production.
- Longtime friends Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen wanted to work together, so after Being Mortal was shelved Ansari called Rogen with "a decent draft" of Good Fortune, and Rogen joined the film two hours later.
- Aziz Ansari doubted Keanu Reeves could play the angel Gabriel, thinking "that guy just seems like he's on a different planet", but was convinced after meeting him. Star-struck by Reeves's Speed and The Matrix, Ansari invited him over for Indian food and dinner.
