Plot summary
In a 21st-century dystopia the golem is a genetic clone. Technology directs how people move, and doctors run a program for improving the human race. The monsters of this world are not the doctors' creation; they are already the species of the future, and the doctors suspect one of them of being human. Pernat is questioned about a murder he cannot recall, along with his own life. Released, he reenters a world of raving lunatics, deranged dentists and murderous doctors, where scientists hold that a cast-iron oven hides the secret of human creation.
