Plot summary

The Martians arrive claiming friendship, and Poland becomes a state where television does the explaining. Iron Idem presents Iron Idem's Independent News, a program whose stories his boss has always chosen; once the visitors land, the bulletins turn openly favorable to them. One morning police officers and aliens ransack Idem's apartment and take his wife away in a body bag. The state apparatus, working with the Martians, keeps him on the air and gives him copy that praises the visitors and asks people to donate blood. Turned out of his flat, he watches stupefied citizens submit to the repression around them.
