Plot summary
Virgil, a lone traveler in a dystopian near-future, arrives at an outpost and pays a local man, Keith, to transport him to a region called The Compound. Crossing an inhospitable desert, the two men come upon a huge gold nugget far from any settlement. Their basic tools and truck cannot shift it. Keith proposes that one of them stay behind with the gold while the other fetches an excavator, doubting that Virgil could survive alone out there. Virgil insists on being the one to remain, since the find was his. Keith leaves him with the remaining supplies and says he will be back in about five days. Virgil settles in beside the nugget.
