Plot summary
Joe, Willie Davis and Albert Garner are lifelong friends in Brooklyn who worked for the same steel company. A corporate merger wipes out their pensions, and the three men live on social security. Joe learns that the bank intends to foreclose on his house within a month, while Willie, whose kidneys are failing, lives far from his daughter and granddaughter. Albert teaches saxophone and flirts with Annie Santori, the grandmother of one of his students. During an appointment at the bank, Joe watches three masked robbers escape with more than $1.6 million. He proposes that he and his friends rob the same bank, and though Albert and Willie are appalled at first, they agree.

Writer Theodore Melfi insisted on changing the remake's ending to something more upbeat, saying he did not want to see the heroes he had been rooting for die or go to jail.- Dustin Hoffman was in talks to join Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine as the leads in November 2014, but the third retiree part went to Alan Arkin, who completed the lead cast of three in April 2015.
